Letter Shows Einstein Didn't Believe in Fairy Tales

Einstein Letter Sells for $404,000

LONDON (May 16) - A letter in which Albert Einstein dismissed the idea of God as the product of human weakness and the Bible as "pretty childish" has sold at auction for more than $400,000.
The letter was written to philosopher Eric Gutkind in January 1954, a year before Einstein's death. In it, the Einstein said that "the word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish."

Einstein experts say the letter supports the argument that the physicist held complex, agnostic views on religion. He rejected organized faith but often spoke of a spiritual force at work in the universe.

Inside a Cult - National Geographic Channel

Inside a Cult

Inside a Cult - National Geographic Channel

"Michael Travesser claims he is the Messiah, and the members of the Strong City cult believe him. NGC goes inside the Strong City cult in New Mexico to get an extended look at the lives of its 56 members."
"Doomsday cult leader Michael Travesser prophesied that the world would end October 31, 2007 -- but what happened? Go inside Travesser's cult to meet its leader, its followers and the dynamics that shape cult behavior."

There is nothing creepier than the smugness of the true believer.

I’ve had toothless, bubba kristers laugh among themselves and to my face in tremendous glee at the thought of my ultimate punishment in the fires of hell. They found both revenge and solace in their communal commiserations of my certain destiny.

With cults, it’s always us and them. There’s only one absolute answer and we have found it. Abstraction, like the dinosaur, is a tool of the devil. To question authority is to damn the divine. There’s nothing political going on in this group and you’d better shut up.

I’ve been following the Mormon Polygamy Compound situation and have been reminded how isolated from the real world a person becomes in a cult. Everything outside the community is suspect; only the spiritual leader can provide absolute truth.

I watched this documentary, “Inside a Cult,” tonight on the National Geographic Channel. I had heard a former member of this cult interviewed on the radio earlier this week and found her comments riveting. The documentary proved as shocking as she said it would be. Once again, idealistic, searching, young people are manipulated to serve a phony god and prepare for the imminent end of the world. Watching the cult members condescend to non-believers, these poor deluded souls reminded me of the Manson followers who also spoke in dreamy eyed arrogance about the “divinity” of their leader. These cult members are creepier than any movie monster or gory special effect. Real horror checkmates fantasy every time.
